Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie (Toei short film)
From WikiFic
Toei, the producers of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series (often mistakenly referred to as "Shadow Games" or "Season 0") also produced a 30-minute short film, also titled "Yu-Gi-Oh!" (same as the animated series). Because it had no other title or subtitle, it is also called "Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie." However, in the United States, where only the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters series had been released as a dub, there was no "other" series or movie, so the movie produced by NAS, originally for English-speaking audiences, was also released under the title "Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie." In Japan, however, where that title would cause confusion, the movie had an additional subtitle; "Pyramid of Light," to differentiate it from this shorter, Toei-produced film.

In this film, a young boy by the name of Shougo Aoyama (
Errata:
- In the opening scene, a schoolmate mistakenly refers to Shougo as "Shoga," though the boy does have a bit of an accent. It is most likely that the subtitles (done by GoldenUmi, as TV Nihon has yet to subtitle the movie) are mistaken, as you can clearly hear Yuugi refer to the character as "Shougo-kun."
- Another boy in the same scene refers to "Magic and Warriors" (Note: NOT "Magic and Wizards," the initial name used for the game now known as Duel Monsters in the anime/manga, and as just plain "Yu-Gi-Oh" in the real world, often called the TCG or OCG depending on the country of origination; this could again be a mistake of the subtitles) as a separate game from "Duel Monsters," even though they are essentially the same game.
- Yuugi says that Shougo is his neighbor.
- Anzu is working at a "Duel Monsters Center," which appears to be a cafe that caters toward Duelists. Thus, this movie almost certainly post-dates her working at Burger World, but comes before she works at Kaiba Land (something that happened in the manga Death-T arc, but is not currently known if it also happened in the Toei animation, though it is likely).
- Shougo and Jounouchi are both aware of Yuugi "transforming" into Dark Yuugi, something which supposedly wasn't readily obvious to anyone for sometime, and in the manga, Yuugi didn't confess to having "another person inside of" him until the Death-T arc.
- Kaiba's character design is more in line with his Duel Monsters incarnation: brown hair, and long, purple overcoat.
- Seto Kaiba stages a sort of mini-version of Battle City in the movie; it is invitation-only and involves players dueling and using a card (most likely their strongest and/or rarest) as ante.
- Dinosaur Ryuuzaki makes a cameo appearance as one of the first duelists that Seto Kaiba defeats. It is not known which card Kaiba takes from Ryuuzaki.
- Dark Yuugi uses a Trap Card against Kaiba that he calls "Incantation of Dark Cross Star," which seems to be an early version of the Spellbinding Circle card. However, it reduces the effect of the monster it targets, rather than simply preventing it from attacking or changing battle position.
- Kaiba plays what he considers his "other" trump card (besides the Blue-Eyes White Dragon), the "Evil Chain" (Jaaku naru Kusari/邪悪なる鎖). "Evil Chain" acts as sort of a Polymerization card, combining the 3 Blue-Eyes' ATK values. However, unlike Polymerization, Evil Chain doesn't literally fuse the monsters and create a new one; this way, the total ATK value is 9000, rather than 4500, which is the ATK value of the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, the creature formed by Polymerizing 3 Blue-Eyes White Dragons. It is not known whether "Evil Chain" is a spell or trap card, but it has a continuous effect, and allows the monsters it binds to attack all at once, rather than one at a time. The card also functions as such that, if the "Evil Chain" is destroyed, the monsters attached to it are also destroyed. It is considered a result of battle, so the ATK values of the monsters attached with the "Evil Chain" are deducted from the player's Life Points]. Because Dark Yuugi used the Red-Eyes Black Meteor Dragon to accomplish this, it is assumed that the Toei animation version of the Dragon possesses the special ability to target non-Monster cards (in the ending credits, the whole card is shown; it is not a Monster Card, but the text cannot be seen with enough clarity to determine if it is a Trap or Spell Card).
- Dark Yuugi doesn't appear to take an ante with Seto Kaiba when they duel, which goes against the tournament's invitation rules, and most likely Kaiba's actions with previous opponents.
