Talk:Shipper's List
From WikiFic
After some discussion at the Warshipping community @ LiveJournal, I'm considering allowing a FEW redirect articles that use names that are not on the "official" Shipper's List. These would include Warshipping (Revengeshipping), Angershipping (Jeershipping), Rumorshipping (Blueshipping), and so forth. If an alternate pairing name is sufficiently popular, I see no reason NOT to mention it on the 'ship page, especially if one or more persons comes forward with specifics as to its creation (e.g. date, reasoning).
I'm also thinking of rewording the main introduction to the list, so as to clarify what is meant by 'No bashing, arguing, or shipper's preference.' I would like to avoid people saying "X shipping SUCKS!" or "I like X shipping better than Y shipping..." or anything like that. However, discussion as to more popular or alternative fan names is perfectly acceptable. If there is an explicit reason why a certain name didn't make it onto the "official" shipper's list but is still considered a popular name by a number of fans, then it should be stated as such on the respective article(s). Especially helpful with these arguments would be dates, for anyone that can find caches of the old forum postings or date/time reference for the Shipper's Club postings (especially comments, since that's where the bulk of the LJ-era 'ship names came from).
Furthermore, to clarify what "fanon" means in relation to strictly fan-created things like 'ship names-- what is considered "official" (and that term should almost always be used in quotation marks) will be due to the "majority" which can be determined by:
- A search via Google or Yahoo! for the most popular search term (I also recommend GoogleFight for this)
- A search on Fanfiction.net
- A search on DeviantART.com
- Looking at the Shipper's Club community on LiveJournal - the only reason this community acts as a "governing body" for 'ship names is because the very idea of the Shipper's List was started at a forum owned by LFangor, who later moved it to LiveJournal. Anyone who had heard of the list before, contributed to it on any of the forums, etc. was encouraged to join LJ and continue their participation. As a result, the vast majority of fandom knows about the list, if not just where it's hosted nowadays, and a great number of 'ships are representd by the members, rather than just fans of certain pairings alone. Final say in whether pairings are approved, however, is left to the community mods and participating members. If you have a problem with any of the names already on the 'shipper's list, or with others' suggestions, I suggest you join the community and make your voice heard! Ranting about it on LJ will only result in your pages getting deleted or rolled back, with the possibility of your account being blocked.
What will NOT change: Like the shipper's list, I see the inclusion of canon characters with OCs (Original Characters) or inanimate objects (the Blue-Eyes White Jet, for example) to be too bold an endeavor, with far too many possibilities for WikiFic. While I will not say one way or the other that "Jetshipping" is bad or good -people are more than welcome to like whatever pairing they want and call it whatever they want- for the sake of organization on WikiFic, I plan to continue using those names which are accepted/approved at the Shipper's Club community on LiveJournal. For names that are not on that list yet, fans are welcome to contribute to it or WikiFic with their suggestions, following the same rules outlined in both places. "Double names" should be avoided at all costs, if possible, unless a name was invented and has become popular prior to its inclusion on the Shipper's List/WikiFic, but an "official" name in those places already exist. In such cases, parentheses should be used to connotate the characters involved, and/or whether or not it's from a different version of the canon (e.g. a Yu-Gi-Oh series 'ship going by a name also used by GX; the GX pairing would have (GX) beside its name to denote the fact that the characters involved are from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX only; crossover pairings should have their respective canon listed in parentheses beside the individual character names).--Azurite 04:36, 22 April 2008 (EDT)
