It's SET, NOT Seto! >< - Fran

Names & WikiFic

There's a lot of argument about this and many other names, which is why I ended up adding rules about some names to WikiFic's Article Policy. You can check it out by going to the community portal. In the meantime, we can add a section here, as with the Pharaoh's page, about the "great name debate." I've heard tell of a supposed Takahashi interview where he actually says that the character's name is meant to be the same as the Egyptian god's, and it's meant to be "this" and not "that," but I've never seen EVIDENCE of said interview. Further, though the name is in katakana in the manga, that's not definitive proof that it's meant to be "Set" rather than "Seto." (Egyptian royalty/priest names can and did end in 'o,' but very rarely 'u,' which is why "Seto" holds up where "Atemu" does not.) I'm of the mind that if he really wanted it to be a pun on the Egyptian god's name and THAT myth, rather than a semi-convenient half-pun (half on the Japanese name, and half on the Egyptian), Takahashi would have used "Setto" (セット) to really emphasize the 't' sound, rather than the 'o' at the end of the syllable. In Japanese, the 'to' syllable is never half-pronounced, with the 'o' coming out silent. Doesn't matter where in a word it is, it's just never done, even with foreign names. If someone were to see the High Priest's name, they'd call him the same thing they call Kaiba: Seto. --Azurite 19:23, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

But, since there is no 'tu' to be cut off and 'tsu' is not the same as just a t character, to is the closest. You can't hush the o with the 'tto' because the o also becomes empathized. No one has the same name from AE to modern times, even Isis's former self (assumed)'s name is written differently, indicating that it's not the same name.

To be an utter pigheaded brat, I see far more indication that it should be just 'Set' than 'Seto' so 'I see no proof!' really doesn't hold up too well since there's no proof the other direction either. - Fran
