Shaadii
From WikiFic
Shaadii (also romanized 'Shadi,' though the proper katakana for his name シャーディー) is the mysterious modern-day holder of both the Millennium Key and the Millennium Scales. Very little is known about him compared to any of the other characters in the series; in the Gospel of Truth character guide, Shaadii is the only recurring character who does not have a birthday, blood type, favorite and least favorite food, height, or weight listed.
Shaadii played a vital role in the early chapters of the manga, and in a few of the original Toei animation episodes which predate the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters series. He also appears in the NAS-produced Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters series, but much more sporadically, as his role in the final arc is drastically reduced and partially handed to Bobasa.
What is known about Shaadii is that he is from a clan of Tombkeepers, similar to Malik Ishtar and Isis Ishtar. Both the Ishtar siblings have met Shaadii before, but they do not seem to truly know who he is or where he came from. However, Shaadii seems to have no discernible relation to either of the Ishtar siblings other than that they are all Tombkeepers and guardians of the Millennium Items.
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
In the Toei animation, Shaadii is undoubtedly human, as he travels from Egypt via plane to see an Egyptian exhibit on display in Domino, Japan. When he looks at the mummy of an ancient pharaoh, Yuugi Mutou spots him and sees him crying. However, subsequent appearances of Shaadii, mainly in the manga and in the NAS-produced anime feature Shaadii as more of a spirit or ghost of sorts, enabling him to appear and disappear at will, such as when he appeared through a wall and told the Ishtar siblings that their father's death was "the will of the Pharaoh." Also, aboard the Battle Ship, he saved Hiroto Honda and Ryuuji Otogi from certain death, but disappeared after the fact. He also disappeared after briefly speaking to Isis Ishtar prior to her duel with Seto Kaiba aboard the Battle Ship.
In the final arc of the manga, it is revealed that the mysterious NPC Hasan is in fact Shaadii. He mentions that at one point, he had lived as a real human, but he was killed by the character we know as Ryou Bakura, or more likely the Spirit of the Millennium Ring, Dark Bakura. It is not known whether his murder took place thousands of years ago, in Ancient Egypt, or more recently, in the 20th century.
Shaadii was also responsible for giving Pegasus J. Crawford the Millennium Eye. Pegasus went to Egypt to search for a way to revive his deceased beloved, Cyndia, but stumbled on Shaadii punishing someone unworthy who tried to steal one of the Millennium Items. Because Pegasus had seen the punishment, Shaadii posed an ultimatum upon Pegasus: attempt to become the true, worthy holder of the Millennium Eye, or face punishment for spying on sacred Tombkeeper activity. Pegasus was found worthy, and held onto the Millennium Eye until the end of the Duelist Kingdom tournament. Despite Shaadii having been responsible for the loss of one of his eyes, Pegasus clearly respected Shaadii, as portraits of him were found in the castle at Duelist Kingdom during the final duels.
A Link to the Past?
There are some theories that Shaadii may in fact be the 20th-century reincarnation of Shada, one of Pharaoh Atem's guardians, and the former keeper of the Millennium Key, similar to how Sugoroku Mutou is clearly the reincarnation of the former holder of the Millennium Key before Shada, Siamun. However, there is no canonical evidence to support this theory either way, other than the resemblance between the two men's names and their shared Millennium Items.
