Rules

  1. DATES
The opening day is 15 June 2006. Writers will have from then until 15 December to write and send in to Apollymi. Voting will begin on 18 December and go until 2 February 2007. Winners will be announced by 16 February at the latest. Check the updates log for more information.

  2. CATEGORIES
There will be two categories (shounen-ai/yaoi and general/het) set into divisions: 15,000 words minimum (the "short" novella category) and 25,000 words minimum (the "long" novella category). This contest is open to Yuugiou stories only - no Yuugiou GX.
This site is the one geared toward organizing and judging gen/het stories. Please go here for the shonen-ai/yaoi categories.

  3. ENTRANCE PROCEDURE
Email Apollymi at ygo.contest@gmail.com if you are planning on participating in the contest. Please include if you will be writing shounen-ai/yaoi or gen/het and which division you anticipate falling into (15k or 25k).

  4. SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
When your entry is completed and ready to be sent, email it to Apollymi at ygo.contest@gmail.com, with the following information:
    ¤ Author Pseudonym
    ¤ Author Email Address
    ¤ Author Webpage (if applicable)
    ¤ Story Title
    ¤ Category (shounen-ai/yaoi or gen/het)
    ¤ Pairings
    ¤ Word Count
    ¤ Summary
    ¤ Author's Notes (if applicable)

  5. GUIDELINES
There is a shounen-ai/yaoi category, but the emphasis is on content/characters over sex and smut. All entries must be original. No more than 200 words can have been online or available on a mailing list prior to the end of the contest.

  6. BETA'ED STORIES
All entries must be beta'ed. I will not force authors to post their beta's information, but constant grammar/spelling mistakes will hurt a story's chances. If an author does not have a beta reader, please inform Apollymi and I will do my utmost best to locate one.

  7. JUDGING
Shounen-ai/yaoi stories will be judged by Apollymi and Katsuko, while gen/het will be judged by Katsuko and Azurite, for 50% of the consideration. Comments given to the story will be taken into consideration but will only receive 25% of the consideration. The other 25% of the consideration will be split between the popularity poll and the unique number of hits each story receives. If something falls through with the poll/counter (like someone taking advantage of it to up their story's popularity), the consideration scale will slide to 75% judges' and 25% comments.

  8. WINNING
There will be a winner and a runner-up in both categories and both divisions, as well as a Judge's (i.e., Apollymi) Favorite. Runners-up will receive a banner and possibly an Amazon.com gift certificate. Winner's will receive a banner, a choice of selected doujinshi (if desired), and an Amazon.com gift certificate. Amounts of certificates will depend on amount of donations. Judge's Favorite is something between a special category and overall winner; it will be selected from all categories and divisions.

  9. COMMUNITY
There is a Livejournal community associated with the contest, which can be found at:
    http://community.livejournal.com/ygo_novella/
The community is to help authors out, with locating a beta, to check on status, find out deadlines, and anything else that might prove necessary.

  10. MISCELLANY
Collaboration between authors on stories is accepted, as long as the writing still meets the word count. This year, I would like to limit the categories to just Yuugiou (no crossovers, other series, etc.), though. There are no alternate universe restrictions. This year the emphasis is strictly on lengthy, good fanfiction.

  11. THINGS I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO SAY
¤ No OCs with major characters. I don't want to read some fangirl's wishful thinking or thinly disguised fantasy. This is a GOOD fanfiction contest.
¤ If you're going to whine and cry about something with the challenge, whine and cry about to me, not on LiveJournal like a child. Azurite mentioned the lack of het/gen and it got added; it will not exist for next year though (unless it's through a separate contest/site/community, and there is enough interest).
¤ This is about to be a classic example of one person ruining it for everyone... or at least the people who want to write gen/het for the contest. Thanks to the whining on YGO Rants regarding the contest, if I have not received a notification for a gen/het story in the contest, I will close that section by or on Wednesday, 21 June.
